Week five brought an unexpected insight: sometimes the most productive thing you can do as an engineer is to completely disconnect. A weekend almost entirely laptop-free was genuinely refreshing, and returning to work on Monday felt energising in a way I hadn’t experienced in a while.

Claude Code continues to excel, and I’m finding the Claude Code-Cursor combination particularly effective for different types of development work.

The Value of Disconnection

The laptop-free weekend wasn’t planned, but it turned out to be exactly what I needed. Without the constant background hum of notifications, builds, and mental parsing that comes with daily development work, I found myself thinking more clearly about problems I’d been wrestling with.

Ideas that had felt stuck suddenly seemed more manageable, and I could hold more complex architectural concepts in working memory without feeling overwhelmed. This week deepened my understanding of AI development tools, particularly around the tension between capability and trust. Claude Code remains excellent for complex reasoning tasks and architectural discussions, whilst Cursor’s Tab completion feels remarkably prescient—I genuinely miss it when working in Neovim.

MCP servers are showing serious potential as game-changers for development workflows. The ability to give AI tools direct access to system context—file structures, git history, development environment state—creates possibilities that feel genuinely powerful. Yet I find myself hesitant to fully embrace them.

This hesitation isn’t technical; it’s psychological. There’s something about granting AI tools significant system access that requires building trust gradually. Perhaps it’s the same instinct that made early developers wary of package managers or continuous deployment—healthy scepticism about automation until you understand its boundaries.

It’s harder than it sounds, especially when experience has taught you to spot obvious problems quickly. But it made me wonder if I’m too quick to push back on suggestions. This connects to AI-assisted development too—AI tools often suggest unexpected approaches that are easy to dismiss, but some contain insights worth exploring if you give them those five minutes.

Having worked in start-ups for years, this article captured something essential about the emotional reality of building software products. This tension between realistic assessment and necessary optimism defines much of technical leadership. You must simultaneously acknowledge genuine technical challenges whilst maintaining belief that they’re solvable. The weekend break reminded me that this balance can be mentally exhausting in ways that aren’t always obvious.

This piece crystallised something I’ve been feeling about AI-assisted development. The analogy that struck me: “Asking an agentless LLM to write code is equivalent to asking you to write code on a whiteboard.”

The validation schema improvements for ChuteSetupSort highlight something important about enterprise software: reliability matters more than cleverness. Farmers using Breedr need the system to work consistently, even in challenging conditions. Robust validation prevents data corruption that could affect livestock management decisions.

The challenge isn’t understanding the value of disconnection or AI assistance—it’s building sustainable workflows that incorporate both without losing the benefits of either.

The goal is creating development rhythms that maintain high-quality output whilst preserving the mental clarity and creative energy that make engineering enjoyable. AI tools should amplify human capabilities, not replace human judgment. Regular breaks should refresh perspective, not interrupt momentum.

The most interesting question isn’t whether AI will change how we write code—it already has. The question is whether we can evolve our practices thoughtfully enough to harness these capabilities whilst maintaining the craft aspects of engineering that create genuine satisfaction.

Remember: the best engineering solutions often emerge from the intersection of technical capability and human insight. This week reminded me that both elements require intentional cultivation.
